Who in your life might be a little sad or lonely this Valentine's Day?

When I was a classroom teacher, I didn't love Valentine's Day. I had to plan weeks in advance for a big party, which included too much candy, too many gimmicky activities and would leave my classroom trashed.

By the time I was done planning all that hubbub, I had no motivation to do much of anything for my family or friends.

Now, I get to teach adults and have a totally different perspective on the holiday.

I have met so many people who have lost their spouses after decades of marriage to sickness or maybe divorce. They are now single and trying to create a new normal as they keep on living. And there are still moments, days and months of extreme loneliness.

I also had a very close friend lose her husband this year long before his time. I'm sure this Valentine's Day will be one of many "firsts" that will be impossible for her.

I'm sure you have similar experiences with people in your circles too... all around us people are lonely and hurting even if they don't show it on the surface.

So maybe Valentine's Day can be about reaching out to someone who really needs it this year. It doesn't take much to bring a smile to someone's face and a little reminder that they are loved.

You still have two weeks to make a plan, but remember even something small can make a huge difference for someone maybe take the sting out of the loneliness of Valentine's Day this year!
